TRENTON, N.J. – The Assembly voted to expand medical marijuana as legitimate medicine for many illnesses today, but Democrats aren’t treating it like a regular prescription. Instead, they are taxing it – even though New Jersey’s medical marijuana is already the most expensive in the nation and isn’t covered by insurance.
Assemblyman John DiMaio spoke up on the issue, pleading with sponsor Assemblywoman Joann Downey to forego the Democrats’ addiction to taxes and consider people’s lives more sincerely. She insisted that it needs to be taxed until 2025, after the drug is estimated to be more affordable as production increases.
The motion to eliminate the sales tax on medical marijuana was voted down mostly along party lines 45-27.
