Dancer’s bill to extend deadline for annual school district audits advances

TRENTON, N.J. – Assemblyman Ron Dancer’s bill to extend the deadline for this year’s annual audit of school districts advanced from the Assembly Education Committee Thursday.

The bill (A4603) extends the Dec. 5 completion deadline to not later than January 31, 2021, and the deadline for submission to the commissioner of education not later than February 5, 2021.

“Due to the pandemic, it has become difficult to conduct on-site audits because only a limited number of people can be allowed inside schools at one time,” said Dancer (R-Ocean).

Another problem he cited is that the accounting firms that conduct school audits also conduct audits of municipalities, which were delayed earlier this year.

“They have pushed back the municipal timeline, which directly affects the school district’s audit timeline,” explained Dancer.  “We need to conduct both audits, but we need to be more flexible in our approach.”

There are over 580 school districts with approximately 2,500 schools in total within these districts.
