Dancer introduces legislation to prevent mistaken identity arrests

Ron Dancer

TRENTON, N.J. – Following the arrest of a Jackson Township music teacher after a case of mistaken identity, Assemblyman Ron Dancer announced he is introducing legislation today to combat such incidents from reoccurring.

“This innocent man spent three days behind bars all because of an error that could have been resolved much sooner,” said Dancer (R-Ocean). “My legislation will require police to do identity checks after arrests.”

Within 12 hours of arrest or detainment on a warrant, the bill requires that an identity check be performed on the person held in custody to ensure that their identity matches the identity on the warrant.
