Assembly passes Dancer bill compensating farmers for regulatory burdens

Ron Dancer

TRENTON, N.J. – Assemblyman Ron Dancer’s bill requiring the State Agriculture Development Committee (SADC) to compensate owners of preserved farmland for changes in regulations that increase the cost of business passed the full Assembly on Thursday.

“In today’s world of global markets, high inflation, and low wholesale prices, virtually no farmer can survive by just being a farmer. It takes flexibility and understanding by the SADC to keep farmers on the land. This bill recognizes that additional regulatory burdens can reduce farm viability,” Dancer (R-Ocean) said.

The compensation required by the bill (A4038) would be funded through the Department of Agriculture’s annual budget. The SADC would have to tell the department how much funding to request each year.
